Summer Solstice and Full Moon

orange/red full moon over leaves of forest or gardenWith both the Summer Solstice and a Full Moon, the last weeks of spring promise renewal. The beginning of summer is a time for Mother Nature to bring rebirth to her garden.Try these three easy tips to help you take advantage of that renewal energy.

Evaluating Before Summer

Tip 1

For some people, the Summer Solstice marks the midpoint of the calendar year. This is an excellent time to reflect on what’s working, what’s not and how far have you come to the goals to which you strive for the year.

For others, the end of June marks the close of a fiscal year end. Evaluating what has worked and what has not for your business will help set you up for success during the next fiscal year.

Setting Intentions

Tip 2

This is a great time to set an intention for your own renewal. What do you bring to this auspicious time of year – the transition from spring into summer? What would you like to accomplish while the weather is warm, the days are long and the garden is plentiful?  For the jam makers and berry lovers, in the northern hemisphere Summer Solstice and the Strawberry Full Moon heralds the ripening of strawberries. For many this reminds them that eating fresh from the garden is often still available via farmers markets and self pick market gardens.

Tracking Intentions

Tip 3

two hands, right hand writing in goal tracking journalTracking your progress on intentions is equally important to setting them. We are often so grateful for a relaxed summer atmosphere that we forget we had intentions for healthier eating, more exercise, increased sales calls – or whatever your mid calendar goals might be. Setting up a weekly tracking system will help you stay on track. Is weekly too often? No. Tracking in small increments makes it easier to keep track and stay on track. It helps to keep your goals top of mind from week to week so that success is more likely. And if things are working to head you in the direction of your goals, it is easier to make a shift, tweak or full pivot to the right direction.

Summer Solstice and the Strawberry full moon provide an excellent opportunity for a check-in, have way through the year. Use these three tips of reflection, setting intentions and tracking progress to get and keep you on track. Make this year your best ever.

Learning to Earn a Living

small plant with few green leaves grown out of glass jars with coins in it, learning to earn a living Service & Livelihood as an Entrepreneur

Learning to earn a living as an entrepreneur is not as easy as it sounds. Some people think all entrepreneurs are good at attracting money. Not the case. Some entrepreneurs are just creative folks with great business ideas. This is such an important topic I spend a whole session on it in my Mentored for Momentum Course for professional organizers. This past weekend, I was reminded myself of the importance of earning a living.

Service & Marketing

Modern marketing teaches us about speaking to the pain points of our ideal client. What is the transformation your ideal client seeks that your service or product can provide? To make marketing feel not so icky, not quite so “I hate to promote myself” kind of feeling, today’s marketing gurus teach us to speak directly to our client. Focus on the transformation your service can provide and not on selling.

That sure sounded good to me and that direction has had an impact on the way I market. I was bitten hook, line and sinker many years ago when first introduced to the “provide service and the money will come” concept. At the time I was already a seasoned entrepreneur and struggling to market my business in way that didn’t feel like I was always trying to sell something. I felt like I was. So I switched up my strategy and started to focus on resolving my clients’ head ache and heart ache. The head ache is what makes them angry and frustrated.  The heart ache was what made them sad.

The Need to Earn a Livingsmall plant with few leaves growing from pile of pennies

Even teachers can need a lesson reminder from time to time. This past weekend my lesson was “even the most creative and service oriented amongst us still need to earn a living”. It came from one of my favourite YouTube influencer couples Boho Beautiful.  This is a couple who filled up their YouTube channel with hundreds of free logo classed and guided meditations. I followed them for years from their free material before it occurred to me to buy a program or their membership.  In addition to their YouTube free content, they fundraise for animal shelters when on the road with their business and provided support to ailing dogs while travelling in Nepal.

In their June 2023 monthly member checkin, Mark Spicoluk asked the question “Why do we do all this?” His answer was “to provide service and support the family”. Hmmm, support the family.  That’s right; even the super successful, millions of follower types on YouTube still have to remember at the end of the day, they have to earn a living.

The Balance

As with so much in life, balance is necessary. Modern marketing is about providing service. We are looking for the know, like and trust factor that we can resolve the headache and heartache of our ideal clients. AND it is about earning a living and supporting ourselves and our families. It’s good to be reminded to provide service and focus on the transformation our clients need. There is  also nothing wrong with making money while we are at it.  “The last time I checked, we all pay the same price for milk” is one of my favourite expressions with my mentoring students.

So, if you are an up and coming entrepreneur, focus on providing great service. And, remember, it ok to earn a living.

If you are one of my idea clients, you ought to expect to receive great service from us entrepreneurs.

Gratitude: November Book Reviews

The Gratitude Diaries, Janice Kaplan

2015, Dutton

Kaplan wrote her “year in the life” account after a particularly miserable New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, experience that left her questioning her attitude towards life. Her resolution to be more grateful for life expanded to a year of practice, experiment and research on the value and impact of gratitude.

I enjoyed this book so much that I bought a copy, after originally listening to an audio version, and I look forward to reading it again. Kaplan is a journalist by training and trade and brings her journalism skills to her work. She has divided the book into four seasons and attached aspects  of our lives, for which we can be grateful, to each season. Winter includes the impact of gratitude on Marriage, Love and Family. Spring is Money, Career and The Stuff We Own. Summer includes Gratitude and Health and, finally, Autumn is Coping, Caring and Connecting.

As a journalist, Kaplan brings a commitment to research to her book. This was, in fact, the reason I ended up buying a copy. Given my work, I was particularly interested in the impact of gratitude on The Stuff We Own. Kaplan appears to have a fascinating, never-ending resource of friends, colleagues and professional connections that contribute to her research on the impact of gratitude. If for no other reason, the richness these interviews bring to Kaplan’s story makes it  worthy of the read.

Needless to say, I highly recommend this book.  It’s uplifting, informative and fun. It’s not hard to read. And, by the way, it’s equally easy to listen to in the audio version.

The Gratitude Prescription, Will Pye

2019, Reveal Press

Pye’s autobiography outlines his use of gratitude to manage the symptoms, side effects and treatment of a brain tumour. He calls his unique approach “radical gratitude,” or thankfulness and appreciation for everything, without preference. Using radical gratitude, the author was able to overcome the symptoms, fears and concerns associated with his brain tumour.

I found this book difficult to read. It did not hold my attention very well as I found that his stories rambled.  I also found myself forming opinions contrary to Pye’s, which made the book difficult to finish. While his style did not engage my interest, the book still provides a good resource for meditation, affirmations and gratitude exercises.

A Simple Act of Gratitude, John Kralik

2011, Hachette Books

Originally published as 365 Thank Yous, Kralik’s book is the story of a year in which he committed to writing a daily personal thank you note. He made this commitment on New Year’s Day, while walking in the mountains above his town of Pasadena. After experiencing a particularly dismal previous year, and feeling significant despondence (enough that a dear friend was checking up on him), Kralik remembered that his grandfather had been devoted to writing thank you notes. He also remembered that he had never followed up on a particular commitment that his grandfather had asked of him, to write a thank you for a coin he had received. Thinking that it was one thing over which he had control, while the rest of his life felt out of control, Kralik committed to writing a letter every day of the year.

This was a wonderful story and a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I highly recommend this book. It is interesting, entertaining, and easy to read. I blasted through it, completely curious to find out how he ever managed to become a judge when his life, including his law career, appeared to be in ruins. Along the way, as I followed his journey, I was reminded of the power of the Thank You and intrigued by the even greater power of a written Thank You.

Thanks a Thousand, A.J. Jacombs

2018, Simon & Schuster, (TEDBooks)

Who knew that a commitment to a cup of coffee could lead to writing a book about gratitude? I suppose that when one is an author/journalist by trade, training and vocation, making unusual connections  is not uncommon. Jacombs’ book, originating from his TEDTalk, recounts his attempt to thank everyone who contributes to making his morning coffee available to him. Having found himself particularly cranky one morning while trying to get his cup of java, he realizes that perhaps a little more appreciation might help his mood. And so his journey, and his story, begins. Early on, Jacobs becomes aware of the magnitude of his project. With some help from his young son, he decides to stop at one thousand thank yous.

This gratitude journey covers some serious geographic territory. While following along, I developed an appreciation for the commitment of authors to the depth of their research. Without question, the book would not have been as powerful without the travel details. There is a richness of authenticity that, for example, a trip to a coffee bean farm in Colombia brings to the read.

This is another selection that I highly recommend. Like some of the other books in this gratitude group, it is easy, enjoyable, and entertaining. Frankly, I started the book with curiosity along the lines of “Really? A cup of coffee? This ought to be interesting.” And it was; really interesting and frankly informative. I have a brand-new appreciation for my morning cup of coffee in addition to the value of gratitude.

POC Toronto, Thank You!

Thank you to the Toronto Chapter of Professional Organizers in Canada for including me in their Ask a Senior Organizer panel at last night’s meeting.  I was honoured to share the panel with highly esteemed colleagues Harold Taylor of Taylor in Time and Deanne Kelleher of the Kaos Group.  The evening was very well attended; the view from the front of the room was fantastic with over 40 people in attendance.

Emily Gibson, the evening’s program coordinated, had previously solicited questions from members, which she then distributed to the three of us.  I found this a great strategy since it gave us a chance to prepare our answers and it gave the audience a chance to prepare their questions.

Thank you POC Toronto for a great evening!
